Start Outside Before You Touch Anything Indoors

• Degrease the range hood filter. Soak it in hot water and dish soap for 20 minutes, scrub, rinse.
• Wipe cabinet fronts top to bottom. Cooking grease mixed with winter heating dust creates a sticky film that builds up fast.

Bathrooms

• Scrub grout lines. Edmonton's water is moderately hard and leaves mineral deposits in tile joints over winter.
• Check the exhaust fan. Remove the cover, vacuum the blades, and confirm it actually moves air. A dead bathroom fan causes moisture problems.
• Descale faucet aerators. Unscrew them, drop them in white vinegar for an hour, rinse.

Bedrooms and Living Areas

• Flip or rotate mattresses.
• Wash all bedding including duvet covers and pillow protectors.
• Dust ceiling fan blades before you switch them back to summer direction. A pillowcase pulled over each blade catches the dust instead of dropping it on the floor.
• Move furniture and vacuum underneath. This is where pet hair, crumbs, and allergens accumulate all winter when you keep windows closed.

Basement and Utility Areas

• Check your furnace filter and replace it if it has not been done since fall.
• Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
• Clear any clutter that drifted into the utility room over winter and inspect the water heater for rust or moisture around the base.
